Vinessa’s inspiration to become a financial adviser stemmed from her own experience as a stay-at-home mum. She recalls the vulnerability she felt knowing that if anything happened to her husband, their financial stability could be at risk. This realisation ignited her passion for financial freedom and financial protection, leading her to advocate for families who often overlook the importance of carefully thinking about their finances and taking practical steps to get where they want to be.

Vinessa knows financial planning should start much earlier than many people consider, to ensure families are prepared for whatever life may throw their way.

Getting Started in Finance

Vinessa’s entry into the financial industry was partly by chance. While at university as a mature student, she connected with an experienced adviser who became her mentor. With his guidance, Vinessa took her first steps into the world of finance as a self-employed contractor, eager to learn and grow.

Then, it wasn’t long before Vinessa essentially started the team at Become Wealth (then called Milestone Direct), where she has remained ever since.

Making a Difference

One of Vinessa’s most memorable moments came early in her career when she helped a young couple with three small children secure insurance coverage. Shortly after obtaining the policy, the husband faced a health crisis that left him unable to work. Vinessa tirelessly advocated for them, ensuring the insurance company honoured their claim.

The relief and gratitude expressed by her clients reinforced her commitment to her work: “I don’t know how we would have managed if we hadn’t received this money,” they said. For Vinessa, such feedback is invaluable.

She emphasises the importance of KiwiSaver and how it encourages young people to take an active interest in their financial futures. “As balances grow and people become more interested in their KiwiSaver balances, they’re encouraged to invest further via the numerous investment platforms available to younger people today.” Vinessa says.

A common misconception Vinessa encounters is that you need substantial wealth to work with a financial adviser. She firmly believes that anyone with a good income surplus and the hunger to build wealth – for whatever reason – can benefit from professional guidance.

After a busy day of financial planning, Vinessa finds solace in exercise and meditation, which help her unwind and recharge. She understands the importance of self-care in maintaining her effectiveness as a financial adviser.

Vinessa lives with her amazing husband, and now has a couple of grandkids to keep her occupied.

Vinessa values the relationships she builds with her clients. She makes it a point to send birthday emails to those she works most closely with, to help maintain touchpoints that deepen connections. While a lot more business occurs online nowadays, Vinessa believes that in-person meetings – when possible – foster stronger relationships, allowing her to understand then meet her clients’ needs better.
